Draping art with legacy

Fine yarns of silk transformed into gorgeous handwoven fabrics. The golden zari on the borders and across the cloth, the heavy brocade, arrestingly beautiful patterns and a burst of glorious colours – this is the legacy of a small town amidst a thriving handloom cluster of Andhra Pradesh. Dharmavaram is home to an abundance of cultural history and is celebrated for its handwoven textiles. One such exquisite masterpiece produced here is the Handloom Pattu sarees and Pavadas. Draped on feminine bodies, it is the pride of Andhra women. The Dharmavaram Pattu Sarees and Pavadas do not hide behind the modesty of its people – rather it flaunts the beauty of its wearer with its exceptional quality, fine texture, sheen and timelessness.

A journey through history

Handloom has been the livelihood of the people of Dharmavaram since as far back as 1895. What started as a humble beginning with about a 100 families working the cotton and wool looms, has now grown into a predominant centre of fine silk weaving with more than 2 lakh families involved in the craft. Proof of origins of Dharmavaram sarees can also be observed in the wall paintings of Lepakshi temple near Hindupur, its designs etched on the roof and pillars of the temple.

In the local language, pattu means silk. The pavada – a long, conical shaped skirt, pleated and tied around the waist – is a traditional part of the pattu sarees of Andhra Pradesh. Pattu pavadai sarees are typically worn in a contrasting colour combination. While the Dharmavaram Pattu Pavadai sarees can be worn regardless of the weather, it is better suited for cooler climatic conditions. Women adorn themselves with the dazzling fabrics expressly on special occasions and at grand functions.

Behold the meticulous craftsmanship

The magnificence of Dharmavaram silk has been recognized and appreciated by thousands of its patrons. It is treasured for its lustre, the softness of the high-grade silk, the stunning motifs embellished on the borders, the elaborate brocade work, and the gold zari (thread) that adds to its overall grandeur. The semi-arid, tropical climate of Andhra Pradesh and the unique quality of water with which the Dharmavaram silk is washed and dyed ensures that the colour of the yarn does not fade over time.

Dharmavaram weavers deftly produce the sarees and pavadas using a double warp and weft technique ensuring its durability. With great care and precision, splendid patterns highlighting timeless designs are woven into the silk. The pallu and body of saree bloom with flora in vivid hues; the fauna, along with legends and folklores of the country often become a part of the weavers’ artistry. Peacock and parrot designs are extremely popular amongst women. The elegance of the Dharamavarm Pattu Sarees and Pavadas are simply unmatched, making them cherished possessions.
