The largest, the most scenic plantations

Rubber is one of the most significant cultivations on the island and there are many spots where you can observe the manufacturing process. But, it is best showcased in the vast rubber plantations of Wandoor. These are the most scenic plantations, nestled amidst the lush greenery of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, offering a captivating glimpse into the world of rubber cultivation. Covering an expansive area of approximately 931 hectares, these plantations are the largest in Andaman.

The plantations, with around ten thousand rubber trees, are a testament to sustainable agriculture in the Andaman archipelago. Wandoor's location in the South Andaman region provides the ideal climate for rubber cultivation, ensuring robust growth and high-quality latex production.

From tree to golden sheets

As you step into the rubber estate, a mesmerizing sight awaits. Thousands of golden rubber sheets hang from the trees, catching the sunlight like glistening treasures. Each tree wears its own collection jar, ready to yield its bounty. Here’s what happens:

Tapping: The process begins with tapping—the gentle extraction of latex from the rubber trees. Skilled tappers make precise incisions in the bark, allowing the milky latex to flow into the collection jars.

Manual Rolling: Once collected, the raw latex undergoes manual rolling. Workers skillfully flatten it into thin sheets. These sheets, resembling golden parchment, hold the promise of rubber products worldwide.

As you explore the rubber plantations, you'll find yourself immersed in the fascinating world of rubber production through guided tours. These experiences offer a hands-on look at the entire process, from tree to sheet. You'll have the chance to observe skilled tappers in action, watching as they expertly extract latex from the trees in a mesmerizing display of precision. The tour continues with demonstrations of sheet rolling, where you can feel the warmth and resilience of freshly processed rubber. Finally, you'll see how the finished rubber sheets are collected and stacked, ready for their journey to factories around the globe. This intimate look into the rubber-making process provides a unique insight into an industry that connects this serene plantation to the wider world of manufacturing.
