Protecting the precious marine life

Covering an expansive area of 281.5 square kilometres, the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, established on the Andaman Islands near Wandoor, is a protected sanctuary and serves as a haven for marine life, coral reefs, and endangered species. It stands as a testament to the importance of conservation and the marvels of nature.

Safeguarding the ecosystem

Established in 1983, and named after named after Mahatma Gandhi, the revered leader of the Indian independence movement, the park’s creation was driven by an urgent need to preserve and safeguard the rich and fragile marine ecosystem of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The park’s primary objectives were to protect corals, nesting sea turtles and other marine life prevalent in the area.

Islands of the sanctuary

The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park comprises 15 islands, divided into two major groups: the Labyrinth Islands and the Twin Islands. These pristine islands lie approximately 16 kilometres south of Sri Vijaya Puram and are part of the Rutland Archipelago. The Marine Park also features open sea creeks that meander through its lush expanse.
